چکیده

The current work sets forth a practical approach to numerically solve two-dimensional direct acoustic scattering problems from arbitrary shape obstacles that involve severe singularities, such as corners and cusps. First, boundary conforming coordinates are generated. This generation is performed through an elliptic grid generator algorithm, including control of the coordinate lines. The grid curves control solely depends on the initial distribution of grid points. Following the grid generation process, the BVP is formulated in terms of the new curvilinear coordinates, and a finite-difference time domain method is implemented. The presence of the boundary singularities causes instability of the numerical method. However, by appropriately controlling the distance of the grid lines in the vicinity of these singularities, stability and convergence are achieved. A semi-analytical formula for the differential scattering cross section is obtained from the discrete Fourier transform of the computed scattered pressure field. The method is successfully applied to several interesting scatterers of various shapes. Mathematical Models of Smart Obstacles

We propose mathematical models to describe the behaviour of smart obstacles. In the context of acoustic scattering a smart obstacle in an obstacle that when hit b y an incoming acoustic wave reacts circulating on its boundary a “pressure current” to pursue a given goal. A pressure current is a quantity whose physical dimension is pressure divided by time. The goals considered are: 1) to be unde...

Scattering by Obstacles in Acoustic Waveguides

We study the scattering of acoustic waves by an obstacle embedded in a uniform waveguide with planar boundaries, which is a fundamental model in shallow ocean acoustics. Under certain geometric assumptions on the shape of the obstacle, we prove a Rellichtype uniqueness theorem in the case of soft obstacles. The solvability of the scattering problem is proved via boundary integral equations and ...

Reconstruction of the Shape and Surface Impedance from Acoustic Scattering Data for an Arbitrary Cylinder

The inverse scattering for an obstacle D ⊂ R2 with mixed boundary condition can be considered as a prototype for radar detection of complex obstacles with coated and noncoated parts of the boundary. We construct some indicator functions for this inverse problem using the far-field pattern directly, without the necessity of transforming the far field to the near field. Based on careful singulari...

Modified Rayleigh conjecture and applications

Modified Rayleigh conjecture (MRC) in scattering theory is proposed and justified. MRC allows one to develop numerical algorithms for solving direct scattering problems related to acoustic wave scattering by soft and hard obstacles of arbitrary shapes. It gives an error estimate for solving the direct scattering problem. It suggests a numerical method for finding the shape of a star-shaped obst...

A New Guideline for the Allocation of Multipoles in the Multiple Multipole Method for Two Dimensional Scattering from Dielectrics

A new guideline for proper allocation of multipoles in the multiple multipole method (MMP) is proposed. In an ‘a posteriori’ approach, subspace fitting (SSF) is used to find the best location of multipole expansions for the two dimensional dielectric scattering problem. It is shown that the best location of multipole expansions (regarding their global approximating power) coincides with the med...
